Current Needs for Recent Arrivals

IWR depends on donations to provide refugees with important items when they arrive in our community.
We only accept items when we are able to distribute them directly to recently arrived families and individuals.

Contact Perdita Das from our Welcome Home Team at welcome.home@ithacawelcomesrefugees.org if you are interested in making a donation.

Furniture and Household Items - Welcome Home Team

CURRENTLY SEEKING

IWR only collects furniture and household items when we have a new family or individual scheduled to arrive in Tompkins County, and participate in the ‘Welcome Home‘ program. It can sometimes be months or years between arrivals – so we are unable to collect furniture at all times.

When we have new confirmed arrivals, we will release a request list with asks for specific furniture and household items that work in the housing we have secured for them.

COMMUNITY PARTNERS FOR HOUSEHOLD GOODS: We are grateful to Finger Lakes ReUse fo supporting IWR through their ReMAP program which provides vouchers for immigrants and families involved with IWR to purchase materials to outfit their homes. We also partner with Mimi’s Attic, who collect donations and consignments on behalf of IWR, this in-store credit is then distributed to our refugee partners to purchase household supplies and furniture.

Computers & Work Supplies

  • Laptop Computer & Charging cords – Ongoing request for families needing computers for work and school

We work with newly arrived refugee partners to support them in finding employment in Tompkins County. We sometimes need to collect specific items to support our partners in their new jobs.

Groceries & Food

  • GIFT CARDS TO LOCAL GROCERY STORES – We are gratefully accept donations of grocery store Gift Cards in any amount that we then pass on to families we are working with who are struggling with food insecurity. Preferred grocery stores are those on public transportation routes (Aldi, Tops, P&C, Walmart, and Wegmans). Please note the amount on the face of gift cards and mail to Ithaca Welcomes Refugees, 315 N. Cayuga St., Ithaca, NY 14850.
We accept gift card donations throughout the year, with a strong preference for affordable grocery stores, over specialty stores. Businesses can also donate gift cards and receive a tax deductible receipt for their donations.

COMMUNITY PARTNERS IN FOOD SECURITY: We also work with the Friendship Donations Network for additional food security options.

I love to reuse items and to give new life to used items. IWR gives new life to gently used items and helps welcome people into our community with dignity and respect. Supporting the IWR cause is a feel good action! I always wish I could do more!

I grew up in a small community. We always helped each other. It’s the way the world should work and it feels very good to do so.
